Adding Photo Viewer on Windows 2012 without Desktop Experience

There are many a time on a Remote Desktop server where you do not want to install the Windows Desktop Experience but you still want to give your users the ability to view and print images.

The solution is to install Windows Photo Viewer.

Firstly you need to find a similar machine / operating system where Windows Photo Viewer has been installed. Take a copy of the C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer" folder.

I have attached the one I used on a Windows Server 2012r2 system.

You need to copy this folder to two locations

  • c:\Program Files
  • C:\Program Files (x86)

Now open a Command Prompt with administrator permissions and run the following

  • Regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll"

Attached to this article are three registry files which need to be imported into the Remote desktop Server's registry.

No reboot is required. You should now have Windows Photo Viewer without all of the additional functions of Desktop Experience!

Note: Thanks to Nick Freeman for working this out
